For the disposal of matter from exhaust gas cleaning plants, such as toxic heavy metals and organic materials and similar cpds., the material such as boiler ash (1), filter dust (2) and washing foams (3) are fed together to a smelting reactor (5). The reactor (5) gives an output in the form of a safe glass material (6), a residue (7) containing salts and heavy metals, and an exhaust (8) to augment the combustion air (14) for further thermal processing. The heavy metals and salts (7) are carried out of the smelting reactor (5) by the exhaust gas (9), to which ambient air (10) is added to give a rapid cooling to condense the salts and heavy metals (7) to be separated out by a filter (13). The conc. salts and heavy metals (7) can also be taken from the reactor (5) as a vitrified prod. from a number of outlets. Before the feeds (1,2,3) are passed to the reactor (5), they can be treated with one or more additives (11,12) for modification according to their physical and/or chemical characteristics and mixed together. The washing foam (3) can by sprayed or otherwise fed separately into the reactor (5) in a continuous or interrupted action. The washing foam (3) can also be used to pelletise and/or compress the boiler ashes (1) and filter dust (2). The additives are of synthetic and/or mineral waste in a suitable chemical composition esp. phonolite and/or quartz sand. USE/ADVANTAGE - The technique is for cleaning the exhaust from rubbish incinerators, to prevent toxic matter from being released. In a single assembly, the salts are removed, the toxic heavy metals are immobilised or removed, and toxic organic materials and similar cpds. are destroyed by heat.
