The invention proposes a gearbox for a motor vehicle with several forward ratios of the type including a primary shaft (first motion shaft) (1), a secondary shaft (2) carrying the gears (11, 12, 13, 14, 21, 22, 23, 24) for establishing the forward gear ratios and with a reverse gear ratio obtained by using a sliding gear (5) mounted so that it can rotate on a third shaft (3) parallel to the primary (1) and secondary (2) shafts and which can slide axially on this shaft between an active position corresponding to establishing reverse gear, in which it is in engagement with two gears (15, 25) borne respectively by the primary shaft (1) and by the secondary shaft (2), and an inactive position in which it is in engagement with one (15) of the said two gears, characterised in that a part of the said gear (15) is produced in the form of an attached element (15') mounted on the primary shaft (1) facing the inactive position of the sliding gear (5). <IMAGE>
