The starter battery has a top plate (2) consisting of upper and lower parts (4,5) welded together and incorporating openings into which fit the ends (10) of two carrying handles (3) made of a thermoplastics material. Both handles fold downwards when not in use, to fit into recesses across the top plate, without projecting above the surface. The handles are U shaped, with thicker rectangular free ends which fit inside the openings in the top plate, which also incorporate projections (12) retaining the handles in position.
