A full upper jaw denture usually has a smooth surface of the side which faces the tongue. This smooth surface can cause lifelong irritation to the denture wearer because the tongue is on constant contact with the denture surface and generates a nerve signal indicating the presence of a foreign body in the mouth. This produces an unpleasant sensation for the denture wearer which often causes nausea. The denture surface facing the tongue has a surface texture which is the same as that on the side of the denture which is pressed against the roof of the mouth. The unpleasant sensation does not then occur. ADVANTAGE - The time required to become accustomed to the denture is reduced
