<p>An inflatable restraint system including a module (10) disposed adjacent to the chest area of a vehicle occupant (32) the module having an airbag (12) and a high pressure gas generator (18) for exerting a controlled force against the occupant (32) in a direction opposite the direction of motion of the occupant caused by rapid deceleration of the vehicle while simultaneously inflating the airbag (12) adjacent to the occupant. A second embodiment includes an ancillary module (40) disposed adjacent to the rear base of the occupant's neck. In a third embodiment an airbag (54) is incorporated into a child safety seat (50) providing protection from frontal and lateral impact. A fourth embodiment (100) is disclosed for rear seat (98) passenger protection. In a fifth embodiment an adult passenger seat (110) is convertible into a child safety seat (122) that can incorporate an airbag (140).</p> |
