In graft-polymerizing the surface of a contact lens, a suitable amount of reducing agent is added to the polymerization system so as to decompose at a low temperature the peroxide which is introduced to the surface of the contact lens base material by an electric discharge process and to produce radicals. When a fluorine-containing base material is used as the contact lens base material, the processing time can be reduced, so that a change in color of the base material is prevented during the processing. Oxygen dissolved in the polymerization system is removed by reducing the pressure in the polymerization system and applying ultrasonic waves thereto. Alternatively after adding diammonium cerium (IV) nitrate to the polymerization system, the surface graft polymerization is carried out under normal pressure.
|
