Appts. comprises: (a) a supply bunker for quicklime; (b) metering units for quicklime and for water; (c) slaking mixter(s) in which a metered amt. of quicklime can react with a metered amt. of water, with conversion to a suspension of Ca(OH)2, and (d) means, including a supply vessel, by means of which raw materials and/or prods. can be fed, transported or withdrawn. Partic., (i) there is a first slaking vessel (4) in which a predetermined amt. of quicklime can be largely slaked at raised temp. in a partic. time, (ii) the slaking mixer is intended for the (opt.) post-slaking of lime inadequately slaked in the first slaking vessel, (iii) there are means for feeding liberated heat from the slaker-mixer, with slaking water, to the first slaking vessel (4), and (iv) a supply vessel (9), to which the contents of the mixer can be transferred, and a buffer vessel (12) are joined by means, including a pump and a mill (11) in order to maintain in the buffer vessel (12) a supply of the required amt. of suspension corresp. to the specifications. Pref. feed unit for quicklime comprises a hopper with an inlet and a rotating outlet pipe (3), and the feed unit for water is a vessel (6) in which preheated water can be kept, and with a heat-exchanger into which heat from the slaker-mixer can be fed, with the amt. of water needed for slaking. First slaking vessel (4) has a weighing unit, and the vessels (3,7,9,12) may have mechanical stirrers. Mill is a horizontal stirred ball mill, and comminutes the crystals of the suspension by a factor of 5-15. Pipes between the supply vessel (9), the pump and the mill are short and wide.
