An aqueous alkaline suspension of finely divided, X-ray amorphous sodium aluminium silicates with the composition 0.9 to 1.1. Na2O : 1 Al2O3 : 1.8 to 3.6 SiO2 is produced by continuously mixing an aqueous sodium aluminate solution with an aqueous sodium silicate solution in the presence of an excess of soda lye at high temperature. The reaction components are continuously fed into an agitator ball mill suitable for wet crushing, the apparent volume of the balls in which comprises over 50 % of the mill chamber volume, and the average time for which the reaction mixture stays in the mill is set from 3 to 40 s at a temperature of 40 to 80 DEG C. A considerably increased time-space yield is obtained for the precipitation stage without the occurrence of problems with the pourability of the reaction mixture. The incrustation of the precipitation equipment is considerably reduced.
