Stacking apparatus for stacking articles, such as beakers or flat plates of thermoplastics material, expelled from a production tool comprises a device 8, 9, 10 for taking over the articles in successive take-over phases and delivering the articles in delivery phases alternating with the take-over phases to form stacks 19 in stack-forming cycles. The device is pivotable between a take-over setting in which the articles are seized and a delivery selling in which the articles are released the motion being produced by a crank drive (4, 5, 6 figs 1 and 3). A drive 14, 15 powered by a servomotor (16 fig 3) is provided to cause the device to execute a delivery stroke prior to release of each article, the stroke in each stack-forming cycle being successively reduced in length, starting from an initial maximum A, by an amount equal to the pitch spacing of the articles in the stack (H fig 4). The articles may be maintained on receivers 10 by vacuum via bores 12 and 13. <IMAGE>
