Prior to use of an extraction tool (4) a circumferential groove (2) is cut round the inside of the seating ring with a proprietary automatic tool. The extraction tool (4) can then be expanded into the groove and the ring extracted by a force exerted only in the axial direction. The hook segments (3) of the tool are opened out into the groove by an expanding ring (10). Sliding on the shaft of the tool is a hammer (9d) which can be manually driven against the anvil collar (9c) to apply the axial extraction force. ADVANTAGE - Seating ring can be easily removed without damage to ring or cylinder head.
