The damping cylinder (11) is fitted with sensors to monitor the position of the damping piston (10), with one set of sensors (21,22) positioned away from the endstops, and one set of sensors (20,23) monitoring the endstop positions. A programmable control (19) regulates the damping effect of the piston by regulating the venting path (14,13) between the cylinder ends. A proportional control valve (15) is regulated by the processor control to vary the damping in set steps, in a staircase control, or to vary it progressively. The sensors are proximity sensors, e.g. magnetic. The software control for the processor can be adjusted to suit the damping requirements.
