In recording the high efficiency coded form of a video signal into sync blocks of a recording tape, less significant data of the video signal which are not critical for reproduction of an image are recorded into one or more of the sync blocks separately of significant data. Hence, when primary sync blocks carrying the significant data are retrieved particularly at a high-speed playback mode, the image will be reproduced.
