PURPOSE:To readily obtain a polyarylene thioether with a high molecular weight by reacting a given aromatic compound in the presence of an acid to obtain a polyarylenesulfonium salt, followed by dealkylation with a specific reagent. CONSTITUTION:An aromatic compound of formula I (wherein each of R1 to R8 is H, lower alkyl or alkoxy; and R9 is alkyl) is reacted in the presence of an acid (e.g. perchloric acid) to obtain a polyarylenesulfonium salt of formula II (wherein each of R10 to R17 is R1; and R18 is R9), followed by dealkylation with a nucleophilic or reducing agent (e.g. pyridine). Thus, a polyarylene thioether of formula III (wherein each of R19 to R26 is R1; and R27 is R9) is obtained. |
