PURPOSE:To provide an electro-viscous fluid containing an electrically insulating liquid and oxidized carbonaceous particles dispersed therein, exhibiting high electro-viscous effect in spite of non-aqueous system, passing slight electric current and free from short circuit trouble. CONSTITUTION:The objective electro-viscous fluid contains (A) dispersed particles of an oxidized carbonaceous material and (B) an electrically insulating liquid preferably at a ratio of 5-50wt.% of the component A and 50-95wt.% of the component B. The component A is preferably produced by producing dispersed carbonaceous particles from petroleum pitch or coal pitch and oxidizing the particles with an oxidizing gas at 20-35 deg.C in vapor phase or in a liquid phase comprising a hydrocarbon solvent. The treating time is usually 0.1 min to 5hr. The component B is e.g. mineral oil, alkylnaphthalene and dibutyl phthalate and the viscosity of the component is preferably 0.5-500cst at 25 deg.C. |
