This device is of the type comprising two endless side chains arranged on either side of the longitudinal stretching path of the film, these chains being composed of links articulated about a vertical pin and each fastened to many guide and transverse-stretching members, each of these members being formed by a body (3) comprising, on the one hand, at least one stretching gripper (17) and, on the other hand, guide elements formed by rolling bearings and/or by sliding elements interacting with a continuous and solid rail (7). According to the invention, the body (3) has, in cross-section, the general shape of an upside-down "U" having unequal flanges (wings) (5-6) sitting on top of the rail (7), whereas the web (8) of this body (3) comprises, in the middle of it, a central housing (12) for an interchangeable guide element (23), and, on either side of the rail, on the one hand and near the short flange (5), vertical bores (24) for the attachment of at least two interchangeable guide elements (26) and, on the other hand, near the long flange (6) and in the immediate vicinity of the bearing zone of at least one gripper (17), three vertical bores (27) for the attachment of at least one vertical pin (36), carrying interchangeable guide elements (37), and at least the various interchangeable guide elements (37) each have a transverse length (T) greater than the width (L) of the links (35-37) of the chain (34). <IMAGE>
