The present invention relates to an articulation device for a removable backrest of a vehicle rear seat. This device is of the type connecting the lower part of the backrest to the floor of the vehicle, by virtue of spindles fixed to the frameworks of the backrest and interacting respectively with bearings or the like secured to the floor. Each bearing (P) is equipped with a means receiving the spindle (7, 9) and is temporarily rotationally entrained by the latter, the said means and the said spindle (7, 9) being shaped such that the backrest (1) of the seat must first be placed in a position in which it is folded down towards the floor prior to it being possible to remove it from this floor.
