2-Azabicyclo (2,2,1) heptane and -hept-5-ene derivs. of formula (I) are new. In (I), R is 1-8C alkyl, 2-8C alkenyl, 5-9C cycloalkyl or alkylcycloalkyl, CH2Ph or 8-10C alkyl-benzyl, 3-10C heteroaryl with one or more N, O or S, -(CH2)a-P or -(CH2)b-T-(CH2)c-U or -(CH2)d-V-(CH2)e-W-(CH2)f-X; a f are 2, 3 or 4; P, U and X independently OH, O-Acyl, N-alkyl or N-dialkyl (alkyl having 1-4C, pref. methyl) or 2-aza bicyclo (2,2,1) heptyl; T, V, W are independently O, NH or N-alkyl, (alkyl having 1-4C, pref. methyl);. R' is H or 1-4C alkyl, but pref. H; and the dashed line is an opt. extra C to C bond. Prepn. of cpds. (I) comprises reaction of cyclopentadiene with an aldehyde R'CHO in the presence of an amine salt of formula RNH3+X-, where X- is the anion of a strong acid.
