The double floor system uses adjacent floor plates (6) supported by height adjustable blocks (5) arranged in a regular matrix over the surface of the original floor (1). The blocks (5) are adjusted to compensate the uneveness of the latter, using an auxiliary plane extending across a number of matrix points with the blocks (5) inserted between the floor (1) and the levelling plane at each of the matrix points (2). The floor plates (6) are then laid on top of the adjusted blocks (5).
