A machine tool has a headstock (31) which can slide on vertical guide rails (30) on a support (19'). The support (19') forms part of a slide which can slide on longitudinal guide rails (22) on a second slide (17'). This second slide can slide transversely on guide rails (18) mounted on the machine bedplate (11'). The support (19') is moved along the guide rails (22) by a screw drive (21') actauted by a motor (20'). In order to reduce the overall length of the machine tool, the motor (20') and its stator are fitted inside the housing formed by the support (19').
