A side by side refrigerator (10) has a vertical evaporator (15) formed from an elongated tube (27) wrapped with a ribbon of material having spine fins (30) extending substantially perpendicular from the elongated tube (27). The elongated tube has elongated straight runs (28) joined by return bent ends (29) to define a vertically extending evaporator (15) having a generally oval spiral or configuration. In one embodiment, the elongated straight runs (28) are spaced from each other throughout the vertical length of the evaporator to provide a space of constant area for air flow. In other embodiments, the evaporator (15) have some of the elongated straight (28) runs offset inwardly so that the fins (30) overlap to enhance "mixing" of the air flow around the various runs of the evaporator (15). In yet another embodiment the distance between the elongated straight (28) runs decrease. A defrost heater (32,33) is also provided.
