Tumblers in the lock housing prevent the core rotating in it. The key (30) has components movable on it in relation to each other and of the same number as the tumblers. These release the latter in only one of a large number of relative positions. The lock core can have a large number of key passages evenly spaced in the peripheral direction. Each of these passages accommodates a radial lug on a component turning on the lengthwise axis of the key. The latter can be extracted from the core only for a distance sufficient to set the lug combination. USE/ADVANTAGE - Mortised cylinder lock assembly used as combination lock.
