<p>A lighting system for preferentially illuminating the seating area (38) of a mass-transit vehicle (22) includes a light fixture (42) with an elongated lamp housing (52) longitudinally disposed above the seating area (38). Electrically-energized light sources (74) are mounted at each end of the light fixture (42). Three solid-core semi-rigid light pipes (76, 78, 80) extend end-to-end between the light sources (74) and are optically coupled to each other and to the light sources (74). The outer two pipes (76, 80) receive light from the light sources (74) and transmit it along their lengths and into the center pipe (78). All three pipes (76, 78, 80) emit light laterally into the passenger compartment (24). The pipes (76, 78, 80) run parallel to the lamp housing (52) between the lamp housing (52) and the seating area (38) so the lamp housing (52) can direct laterally emitted light from the pipes (76, 78, 80) into the seating area (38). Couplings (100) with rubber seals (108) allow the pipes to expand and contract longitudinally while preventing dust and insects from entering the couplings and inhibiting light transmission.</p> |
