The vertical, cylindrical collectors (16,42), end-capped (20,22; 62,64) are interconnected by horizontal cooling tubes (12) with heat-transfer fins (14). One box (16) has three unequal compartments, the central one (28) receiving (34) mixed liquid and gaseous refrigerant. This passes transversely into a longitudinal subdivision (38), having closed ends (52,54), of the other box, and thence returns transversely to the upper compartment (30) of the first box. From here, it passes (PSS) into the top, outer, zone (56) of the second box. The vapour phase separates; the condensate, augmented during these successive passes, falls down an outer passage (60), re-entering the external circuit (36) via the lowest tubes (P1) and the two bottom compartments (58,32). Fabrication is by heat treatment of assembled aluminium or alloy components, coated with brazing compound.
