PURPOSE:To provide a shift control device for automatic transmission, with which the response in shifting can be enhanced without generating internal locking when shifting is made into a certain position, for example into the second position. CONSTITUTION:A gearing mechanism of an automatic transmission AT is equipped with a 3-2 timing valve 41 to quicken engagement of a 2-4 brake 26 by accelerating the oil pressure supply to an apply port 26a in the initial period of engagement of the brake 26 at the time of shifting from the first to the second position, and thereby the response in shifting is enhanced. This acceleration of oil pressure supply to the apply port 26a with the 3-2 timing valve 41 is either restricted or prohibited by a control unit 32 in case shifting is made into the second position directly from the reversing position in which a reverse clutch 25 is engaged and internal lock is likely to occur in the transmission mechanism if engagement is made together with the 2-4 brake 26, and engagement of the 2-4 brake is retarded to prevent generation of internal locking. |
