PURPOSE:To immerse a preform for an optical fiber in a treating liq. to a certain position at all times even when the preform is immersed in the longitudinal direction and to treat the surface of the preform. CONSTITUTION:When the surface of a preform 3 for an optical fiber is treated in a vessel 2 contg. a treating liq. 1, a preform holding part 3a as the part of the preform 3 not requiring surface treatment is protruded from the overflow position 2a of the vessel 2 and the surface of the preform 3 in the vessel 2 is treated while allowing the treating liq. 1 in the vessel 2 to overflow the vessel 2.
