PURPOSE:To sufficiently secure the backward moving stroke of a gear box without protruding a main shaft backward in the primary collision and assure the smooth forward movement of the main shaft in the secondary collision. CONSTITUTION:The front end of a main shaft 12 supported by a column tube 11 is connected to the input shaft 25 of a gear box 24 via a universal joint 21, a shaft 22, and a universal joint 23, and the shock energy of the secondary collision generated by the forward movement of the main shaft 12 at the time of the head-on collision of a vehicle is absorbed by an energy absorbing member 11a. The column tube 11 is made short so that the front end portion of the main shaft 12 is exposed by the preset length in this device, and the third universal joint 27 inoperably connected by a fixing member to be broken upon reception of the preset load is provided at the front end portion of the exposed main shaft 12. |
