The level gauge has a sensor depending into the fuel tank, providing an output signal dependent on the level within the latter fed to a programmed electronic evaluation stage for controlling a display. When the sensor is initially installed in the fuel tank, the actual signal provided by the sensor for a defined filling level, e.g. an empty tank, is compared with a reference signal provided by the programme, to obtain a correction value for the sensor signal. This correction value is entered in a read-only memory to allow subsequent correction of each supplied sensor signal. Alternatively the initial comparison is repeated periodically each time the reserve fuel tank level is reached, to allow the stored correction value to be updated.
