PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make such a magnetic recording medium compatible in electromagnetic conversion characteristics and a good traveling property, that uses a nonmagnetic base having surface roughness to some extent so that the good traveling property may be maintained even if a back-coating layer is not formed. SOLUTION: This medium is so constituted that a nonmagnetic layer formed by dispersing nonmagnetic powder into a binder and a magnetic layer formed by dispersing ferromagnetic powder into a binder are formed on the nonmagnetic base via a calender treatment stage. At this time, the gap quantity of the nonmagnetic layer before the calender treatment is 30 to 45 vol.%. In addition, the medium is so formed as to satisfy the equation 0.03<=D±2σ<0.08 when the standard deviation of the average diameter D (μm) of the gaps is defined asσ.
