Method and device for the computer-assisted processing of data graphically recorded on a tachograph chart, the chart being scanned optically and the optical signal obtained being converted into a digital signal corresponding to the scanned graphical data. The chart is scanned according to a dot pattern encompassing, wholly or partly, at least the recording surface of said chart, a digital representation being formed of the scanned dots and being stored in a memory for further processing. A starting point for the interpretation of the stored digital representation is found by determining the relative memory position of a reference representation. In addition to optical-scanning and conversion means, the device comprises a slide mechanism for supporting a chart which is to be scanned, and can be incorporated in a standard rack of a personal computer. <IMAGE>
