A method for driving an active matrix electro-optical display having pixel electrodes arranged in a matrix with a plurality of first electrodes arranged in rows, through an active ferroelectric layer disposed between the first electrode and the pixel electrode is provided. A second electrode is disposed in a row direction on an opposed substrate with an electro-optical material in the space between the substrates. The method includes the steps of applying a selective voltage V0 to the first electrode and a data voltage V1 to the line electrode so that the range of the absolute value ¦V1¦ of the data voltage V1 is represented by ¦V1¦<EcxdF(CLC+CF)/CLC in which Ec is defined as the electric field of the active layer, dF is defined as the thickness of the active layer, CF is defined as the capacitance of the picture element of the active layer and CLC is defined as the capacitance of the electro-optical material.
