<p>PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound useful as an intermediate of peroxides and polymers, economically in an industrial scale, by thermally dehydrating di-(2- hydroxy-2-propyl)-benzene in an organic solvent in the presence of an acid catalyst. CONSTITUTION:(2-Hydroxy-2-propyl)-isopropenylbenzene (CAST) can be produced easily and economically from a raw material available easily at a low cost, by the thermal dehydration of di-(2-hydroxy-2-propyl)-benzene (DKA) with an acid catalyst in the presence of an organic solvent, preferably removing the produced water from the reaction system taking advantage of the azeotropic distillation with the organic solvent. The organic solvent is the one dissolving CAST but essentially unable to dissolve DKA, preferably an aliphatic hydrocarbon having a boiling point of <=150 deg.C under atmospheric pressure (e.g. hexane) or an aromatic hydrocarbon (e.g. benzene), especially methyl isobutyl ketone.</p> |
