The present invention relates to a piston machine which can be used as an internal combustion engine or as a pump. The positions of the piston dead points are modified by displacing the pivot of the articulated connecting rod, which converts the piston reciprocating movement into the output shaft rotation, in a direction opposite to the cylinder axis and by bringing back said pivot towards the cylinder axis. The pivot is displaced using a lever having one end acting on the pivot while the other, which bears the tilting axis, co-operates with a drive system.
