METHOD AND DEVICE FOR GENERATING OUTLINE IMAGE

PURPOSE:To enable more practical use for retrieval by extracting only impressive segments so that image information is retrieved even with a line drawing such as a sketch based upon a user's vague memory. CONSTITUTION:After a given image is reduced to specific size (11), edge strength is calculated in picture element units (12), and the mean value and deviation of the edge strength over the entire image and the local mean value and deviation nearby picture elements are found to calculate threshold values (13, 14); and an edge when the edge strength of an aimed picture element is larger than the two threshold values or a part other than the edge when not is decided (15) and the outline image is generated (16).
