The fretting test machine comprises two independent support and control assemblies for an upper test-piece (101) and a lower test-piece (102) placed in contact with each other. A reciprocating movement of the lower test-piece (102) is obtained by means of a support bar (115) suspended by two flexible blades (106) from a framework (120) and connected to a horizontal vibrating pot (113). The upper test-piece (101) is itself mounted on a support device fixed to the central part of a horizontal arm (108) mounted on the framework (120) via an articulation with elastic pivots, located in the vicinity of a first end (181) of the arm (108) carrying a balancing counterweight (111). The arm (108) is furthermore joined to the framework (120) by a horizontal linkage means (109) located in the vicinity of the second end (182), perpendicularly to the arm (108), a vertical fretting force and a horizontal tensile force are exerted in the vicinity of the second end (182). Sensors detect the displacement and the frequency of the horizontal to-and-fro movements of the support bar (115) as well as the tangential fretting force applied to the arm (108). <IMAGE>
