PURPOSE:To obtain a catalyst with high activity and high selectivity for reducing a carbonyl compound by supporting a catalyst compsn. specified in its atomic ratio on a carrier selected from oxides and hydroxides of aluminum, silicon, titanium or the like, zeolite, and silica-alumina. CONSTITUTION:At least one kind of a carrier selected from a group consisting of oxides and hydroxides of aluminum, silicon, titanium, zirconium, magnesium and iron, zeolite and silica-alumina is suspended in an aqueous medium to be reacted with a water-soluble copper salt and a water-soluble iron salt to precipitate copper and iron compounds on the carrier. Subsequently, a water-soluble aluminum salt is reacted with the copper and iron compounds to precipitate an aluminum compound. This precipitate is mixed with alkali metal to be baked to produce a catalyst wherein the atomic ratio of Cu Fe/A/(alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal)/Zn is 1/0.4-2.5/0.5-5.0/0-0.4/0-1.0 is produced. |
