PURPOSE:To provide a method and a device for always accurately indicating the residual capacity of a battery, in which an Ni-Cd battery or the like is connected to a battery charger equipped with the function of detecting full charging to indicate the residual capacity of the battery after charging. CONSTITUTION:During charging, a measured amount of electricity with which a battery is charged is directly added to obtain the current amount of electricity with which the battery is charged, and when full charging is detected the capacity of the battery at that time is used to renew the latest amount of full charging and the ratio of the capacity to the amount of full charging is indicated. In the discharge mode, discharge efficiency indicated by the ratio of the latest amount of electricity that can be discharged to the amount of full charging is multiplied by the current amount of electricity with which the battery is charged to calculate the current residual capacity for discharging and the measured capacity for discharging is subtracted from the residual capacity for discharging so as to indicate the ratio of the latest amount of electricity that can be discharged to the current residual capacity for discharging. Or in the discharge mode temperature is further measured to set discharge efficiency corresponding to both the temperature and a discharging current value and the current residual capacity for discharging is calculated at a sampling period proportional to this discharge efficiency and the ratio of the current residual capacity for discharging to the amount of full charging is indicated.
