A heat sink is constituted by a metallic block (6) assembled from a rectangular baseplate (11) with a carrier for the laser diode (12), and a fixture (14) for two holders (19,20) of the portion of the optical fibre (10) protruding from a feedthrough (9) into the housing (1). Electrical connections are made at contact pins (4). The fixture (14) has two side cheeks extending beyond the laser diode carrier. For optimal coupling, a micromanipulator is used to adjust the position of the fibre end (18) in its forward holder (19) before it is fixed within the rearward holder (20) already secured to the fixture (14).
