Water- and alcohol-soluble sulphonated copolymers (I) from (A) aniline, N-alkylaniline, and/or a phenylenediamine (B) aminobenzenesulphonic acid type cpd. which is cpd. or basic component material, of formulae (1) to (5) or mixt. are new (where R1-R4 = H, MeO, Me, Et, OH, and SO3H; R1 = H or 1-4 C alkyl, partic. Me; x = 0 or 1). Also claimed is prepn. of (I) by copolymerising (A) with (B) then sulphonating copolymer obtd. with a sulphonating agent. USE/ADVANTAGE - Antistatic treatment of articles by e.g. coating, spraying, or immersing in soln. of (I). Addn. of dopant is unnecessary, (I) have increased concn. of SO3H gps. with improved electrical conductivity and improved solubility in aq. and alcoholic solvents.
