Arrangement for generating electric current from flowing water in a large body of water, comprising a frame, and electric generating machine housed in the frame and a drive installation housed in the frame for driving the generating machine, the drive installation being provided with a section which is upright in the frame and at least one section revolving about at least one vertical shaft, preferably about two vertical shafts positioned at a horizontal distance from one another. Said revolving section comprises at least one endless belt which carries vanes which are fastened at a distance from one another and can be swung out towards both sides of the endless belt and on which the flowing water can exert a force to cause the revolving section to revolve, being provided with coupling means which transmit the movement of the revolving section to the generating machine, the angle of the vanes with respect to the flow being changeable. Means for selectively setting the angle of the vanes with respect to the direction of the water flow can be present. This allows the angle between the cell surface and the endless belt or belts to be varied over the depth of the water.
