A non-woven composite material (I) comprises: (i) a mixt. of fibres comprising (a) a cellulosic fibre component comprising at least 15% of (I) and predominantly softwood pulp brushed or refined to a deg. of external and internal fibrillation characterised in that the fibres in the form of a TAPPI Standard Handsheet, have a breaking length of at least about 8km and a density of at least 0.67 g/c; (b) a non-cellulosic fibre component comprising at least one water-dispersible fibre from glass, rock wool or other mineral fibres; (ii) a mixt. of acrylic resins comprising at least 20% of (I) and comprising (a) a soft resin component comprising an anionic water-insoluble ( (AWI) soft acrylic binder resin, having a Tg of -30 to -10(-23) deg.C, and (b) a hard resin component comprising an AWI hard acrylic binder resin having a Tg of 20-40(30) deg.C; (iii) a filler component comprising at least 20% of (I) and comprising at least one particulate, AWI inorganic filler; and (iv) a flocculant component comprising a water-insoluble cationic organic wet-strength resin flocculant in an amt. of at least 200 ppm and all of which are pptd. into a bonded relationship in the form of a sheet. Also claimed is the prodn. of (I).
