Prodn. of absorbent for reversibly absorbing fuel vapour - by dissolving polymerisable vinyl monomer and copolymerisable activated monomer in solvent and polymerising with initiator

Fuel absorbents (I) with 3-dimensional polymer network structures are prepd. by (a) dissolving polymerisable vinyl monomer (II) and activated monomer (III) copolymerisable with (II) in a suitable solvent to form an at least 1% (all pts. wt.) soln. (b) polymerising (II) and (III) in presence of a polymerisation initiator. Pref. (II) is ethyelne halide deriv. (e.g. vinyl chloride) styrene, or deriv. vinyl ester or deriv. vinyl ketone or deriv. (e.g. acrolein) acrylate ester, methacrylate ester, acrylamide or methacrylamide and their derivs. acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile. (III) is crosslinkable monomer with at least 2 vinyl gps. enabling formation of 3-dimensional polymer network on polymerisation. Or (III) is crosslinkable monomer with at least one vinyl gp. and at least one further functional gp. which may react with the vinyl gp. during polymerisation to form an unbranched polymer chain, the unbranched polymer being crosslinked to a 3-dimensional polymer network by a crosslinker. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used in motor vehicle equipment for minimising fuel loss as vapour during filling and while vehicle is stationary or in motion. (I) absorb fuel vapour rapidly and retain high absorption over repeated absorption-desorption cycles.
