Starch (I), alone or in combination with other natural or synthetic polymers, is dissolved by using solvent (II) capable of forming hydrogen bridging bonds (e.g., water), absorbed O2 being removed during dissolution or beginning before dissolution, and the (I)-(II) system being stirred or otherwise sheared below the homogeneity limit. USE/ADVANTAGE - Prepn. of (I) solns. (by shearing for some hours to several days) to be used in combination with other polymer solns. to form, e.g., fibres, threads, flat articles, packaging materials, or preservatives, also for prepn. of derivs., with very uniform distribution of substits. for use in chemical and pharmaceutical industries.
