A device is disclosed for thermally treating loose materials, such as earth, sand, sewage sludge, gravel, etc., in particular for sterilizing garden mould and sand for sandboxes. The device has a reception device (12) with a surface arrangement having at least one surface section (20, 22, 24, 26) inclined with respect to the horizontal. The loose materials are continuously supplied to this surface section by supply arrangement (45). A burner arrangement (35) located above this surface section directly fires the materials to be treated.
