The present invention provides a process for treating a halogenated hydrocarbon comprising a step of bringing the halogenated hydrocarbon into contact with a composition comprising an aprotic polar compound having a 5 or 6 membered ring and a nitrogen atom at an alpha-position of a carbonyl group and an alkoxide represented by the formula: MOR [wherein M is sodium or potassium and R is an alkyl group having 1 to 4 carbon atoms] to decompose the halogenated hydrocarbon.
