A thin film magnetic head (1) having a yoke structure (3) comprising a pair of legs (5,7), a low reluctance back gap (BG) and a high reluctance front gap (FG). The front gap (FG) is defined by the pole faces of pole tips (5a,7a) which each have a cross-sectional area, in a plane paralleling the pole faces, for limiting magnetic saturation in the yoke structure to regions in the pole tip at and/or adjacent to the front gap (FG). The pole tips (5a,7a) define a short throat (X-Y) at the front gap (FG) to increase flux density at the gap (FG) and each pole tip (5a,7a) has an end face portion (5P,7P) extending in a direction away from the front gap (FG), and which confronts the surface of an adjacent disk (M), to distribute flux coupling between the disk (M) and the end face (5P,7P) to minimize stray or leakage flux at the edges of the end faces (5P,7P) removed from the front gap (FG).

|
