A keyboard (12) provides input to actuate a transmitte (10) that has a microprocessor (14) coupled to an output stage (20) with an infrared diode (D2) receiving an input from a voltage supply (16). When logic signals (S1, S2) meet predetermined conditions the supply is activated and the transmission is made. Data telegrams are generated within a defined period. When the mey on the hand-held controller is held in a depressed state the transmission is repeated several times at specific intervals.
