PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rewritable phase change optical recording medium less liable to suffer deterioration due to repetitive overwriting such as the degradation of jitter characteristics, the lowering of the signal amplitude and the occurrence of burst defects, excellent in shelf durability and ensuring good erasure characteristics even under recording conditions of high linear velocity and high density. SOLUTION: The optical recording medium has at least a recording layer and a reflecting layer successively laminated on a substrate in this order and can record, erase and reproduce information when the recording layer is irradiated with light. The recording and erasure of information are carried out by a phase change between amorphous and crystalline phases. A layer containing a substance obtained by combining an element M pertaining to the group IIIA to VIB of the 2nd to 6th period in the Periodic Table with nitrogen as an essential component is disposed in contact with the recording layer. The nitrogen content of the substance is less than the stoichiometric ratio. |
