An austenitic, high Mn steel comprises less than 0.7 wt.% C, with Mn and Al added in amts. within the range defined by the pts. A, B, C, D and E and the balance Fe. Alternatively, the steel comprises (wt.%): less than 1.5 C, 15-35 Mn, 0.1-6 Al,and opt. one or more of up to 0.6 Si, up to 5 Cu, up to 1 Nb, up to 0.5 V, up to 0.5 Ti, up to 9 Cr, up to 4 Ni and up to 0.2 N. Both steels are prepd. by hot rolling and cold rolling a steel slab, and annealing the resulting sheet at 550-1000 deg.C for 5 secs. to 20 hrs. The resulting austenite grains are less than 40 microns in size. |
