A sintered ceramic body for a spark plug insulator is obtainable by sintering a mixture of a nitride- or oxinite-based ceramic powder with AlN or AlON as a main component, magnesia in an amount of from 0.01 wt % to 5.0 wt %, and, as sintering additive, at least one compound of an earth metal or rare-earth metal, in an amount of up to 10 wt % calculated as oxide, the weight percentages being based on the weight of the mixture. <IMAGE>
