PURPOSE:To produce the subject compound which is important as a starting substance for fibers, resins, dyes and the like, with industrial advantage, by oxidizing 1-hydroxymethyl-4-methyl-naphthalene where 1-hydroxymethyl group may be substituted with an acyl group, with molecular oxygen. CONSTITUTION:1-methylnaphthalene is halomethylated and the product is hydrolyzed to give 1-hydroxymethyl-4-methylnaphthalene. The product or its derivative where the 1-hydroxymethyl group is acylated is oxidized with molecular oxygen in a lower aliphatic acid solvent in the presence of at least one of heavy metals such as cobalt or manganese or their salts and bromine or bromides to give 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid or 1-hydroxymethylnaphthoic acid which is important as a starting substance for fibers, resins and dyes. |
